Property management, landlords should be aware of data breach potential

With technology rapidly advancing in the apartment industry, including digital systems that allow for keeping records of tenants and their personal information, two apartment industry experts told Multi-Housing News property managers and owners should be knowledgeable about possible data breaches and how to avoid them.

National Multi Housing Council vice president of business operations and risk management policy Jeanne McGlynn Delgado from

Florida

and legislative analyst Amy Jo Beranek from

Texas

told MHN roughly 126 million Americans had their personal information revealed through data breaches. The pair notes that of all businesses, members of the apartment industry are particularly vulnerable to attacks.

Many

rental managers

and owners keep track of tenants' personal information, including Social Security numbers, phone numbers, bank records, driver's license information and other documentation, according to Delgado and Beranek. Additionally, they say social media and property websites pose a security risk.

To address the issue of data security, Delgado and Beranek told the source the NMHC supports three bills currently making their way through Congress - the SAFE Data Act, Personal Data Privacy and Security Act and Cybersecurity Act of 2012 - to aid businesses in protecting their information.
