The school district is comprised of 62% Hispanic, 26% African-American, 9% Non-Hispanic White, 1% Asian & Pacific Islander and less than 2% other students. On July 20, 2010 the Miami-Dade County School District superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho, Coral Gables mayor Don Slesnick, and other officials will be announcing a new high school that will house the International Studies program. The international studies program offers students an international curriculum that includes world languages and is the only program of its kind in the country. The bilingual education is offered in Spanish, Haitian Creole and Mandarin Chinese, opening a variety of opportunities to the students. The Miami-Dade County School District is the only school district in Florida to offer bilingual education in Mandarin Chinese.
